Like many collectors, my journey back into the sports card hobby started unexpectedly — and with a little bit of beginner’s luck.
As a television reporter, I was working on a story about the rise of alternative investment markets — everything from luxury watches to rare sports cards. The goal was to uncover how collectors were turning nostalgia into smart, tangible assets.
What I didn’t expect was for the story to pull me in.
🏀 One Pack, One Pull: The Paolo Banchero Rookie Ink Autograph
In the spirit of the piece, I picked up a pack of 2023 NBA Hoops — my first in years. It was meant to be research, maybe even B-roll.
Instead, it became a turning point.
Inside was one of the product’s rarer hits: a Paolo Banchero Rookie Ink autograph card.
That moment — the thrill of the pull, the unexpected hit, the immediate adrenaline —
transported me right back to my childhood, ripping wax and hoping for holograms.
🔁 Back Into the Hobby: Trading, Selling, Collecting Again
That one card brought me back. I started learning the new landscape: grading, comps, parallels, Pop Reports. From there, I was buying, selling, and even trading like I was a kid again — only now, with a bit more strategy.
Today, I follow the hobby daily. I track rookie trends, monitor card auctions, and chase stories from the cardboard world just like I chase them in the newsroom.
📈 Sports Cards as Modern Investments
What began as a segment idea turned into a passion. Sports cards — especially rare rookie autos like the Banchero Rookie Ink — represent more than nostalgia. They're a blend of:
Cultural relevance
Statistical speculation
Scarcity-driven economics
And in some cases, like mine, a very lucky pull.
🧠 Final Thought
Sometimes, the best stories write themselves. For me, it started with a feature — and ended with a fire for the hobby rekindled by ink, cardboard, and a little bit of Paolo magic. I ended up trading that card for some cash and a numbered Wemby rookie.
